Bidwell graduate Michele Johnson tending colorful plants at Wildwood Golf Club
In the case of recent Bidwell Horticulture Program graduate Michele Johnson, the critical connection to the future was a bridge. “Graduating from Bidwell was a huge accomplishment,” explains Michele. “It’s definitely a great bridge to get us (Michele and her husband) from here to where we had envisioned we’d like to be when we retire."

Seeking hands-on experience to prepare for a self-sufficient homesteading lifestyle with her husband and grow a career in plant science, Michele turned to Bidwell Training Center—a decision that would completely reshape her career trajectory. Michele was already familiar with Bidwell’s stellar reputation and impactful community presence; three of her seven children had previously attended programs at the affiliated Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild. Realizing that book learning was no substitute for getting her hands dirty when it came to mastering the intricacies of soil, water, and plant health, she enrolled in Bidwell’s Horticulture Program. The program recently took on a new name—Plant Science Technician.
Turning a Long-Term Dream Into a New Direction
Walking into the classroom as a non-traditional student three decades after high school, Michele initially felt a little apprehensive. However, the collaborative, collegial environment and supportive instructors quickly set her at ease, building a foundational confidence that served as the basis for skillbuilding. Beyond classroom theory, the program offered invaluable real-world exposure.

During a class field trip to Wildwood Golf Club in Allison Park, PA, Michele saw more than well-manicured greens, and tree-lined fairways enveloped by Western PA woodlands and wildlife. She saw her future. Her vision began to take shape later when she reconnected with Grounds Superintendent Tom Fisher during mock interviews. Impressed by her dedication and Bidwell’s rigorous skills training, Tom hired her shortly after graduation.
Finding Confidence Through Hands-On Training
Today, Michele thrives as lead Horticulturist at Wildwood Golf Course, managing more than a dozen distinct garden areas—from lush rose gardens to vibrant aquatic pond borders. Michele puts her training and education into practice daily, and she enjoys almost complete creative freedom to do anything that she needs to do around the property. Michele handles plant and flower purchasing, as well as all of the daily maintenance. “Much of what I learned at Bidwell, I have been able to apply here, particularly when it comes to understanding growth patterns, succession planting and water care,” she says. “It's been interesting to go from seeing it in a textbook and doing a report on it to actually seeing it come alive.”
Bringing Plant Science Skills to Life
The work is hard, but the rewards are special. “Having to come out of that comfort zone in a lot of areas to stay physically active and going and build strength and endurance, that's been probably the biggest challenge,” explains Michele.” She adds that experiencing nature and the seasonal beauty of the area near North Park is both motivational and inspirational for her. “The ability to create a space that brings people enjoyment has been my biggest thrill. I think overall the whole place has been one wonderful lesson.”
Growing Through Every Challenge
Michele’s journey underscores the transformative power of adult vocational education. Bidwell Training Center not only provided her with essential skills, but also bridged the gap between a personal dream and a deeply rewarding professional career immersed in nature. And starting soon, Bidwell Training Center now offers an even more comprehensive skill-building experience with the introduction of the new Plant Science Technician Program!.
