CHANGE YOUR LIFE. CHANGE THE WORLD.

Chemical laboratory technicians help create and improve the products you use every day — from materials used in cars and construction to everyday household items. At Bidwell Training Center in Pittsburgh, you can train for this career through an apprenticeship pathway that combines hands-on lab instruction with real-world experience.

You’ll begin by building core skills on campus, then apply what you’ve learned through on-the-job training with an employer partner.

Are you ready to get started?

The Chemical Laboratory Apprenticeship Program is designed for students who want to train for a laboratory career while gaining real-world experience.

This pathway follows the same curriculum as our Chemical Laboratory Technician training, but with a different structure. You’ll start with more time on campus at Bidwell Training Center, then gradually transition to mostly on-the-job training with an employer partner.

Is the apprenticeship path right for you?

  • Learn by doing with hands-on training and real-world application
  • Gain on-the-job experience with an employer partner
  • Start with more time on campus, then transition into the workplace
  • Complete your training in as little as 28 months

Because this is an apprenticeship pathway, you’ll first complete the admissions process and meet requirements to be considered for placement with an employer partner.

The apprenticeship blends training with real-world work experience over a longer timeline. The diploma program is completed full-time on campus and includes an externship.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Chemical Laboratory Technician?
A Chemical Laboratory Technician works in laboratories conducting experiments, analyzing chemicals, and assisting in the development and testing of products. Their role is crucial in ensuring safety and quality control across various industries, including pharmaceuticals, food, and environmental sectors.
Do I need to already have a job to apply?
No — you don’t need to have a job lined up first. You’ll start by completing the admissions process, and then you may be considered for apprenticeship opportunities with employer partners.
How is this different from the regular program?
The biggest difference is how you learn. The apprenticeship combines classroom training with real-world experience over a longer timeline, instead of completing everything on campus.
How long does the apprenticeship take?
You can complete the program in as little as 28 months*, depending on your schedule and placement.
Will I still learn the same skills?
Yes — you’ll cover the same core curriculum as the Chemical Laboratory Technician program, just with added on-the-job experience.
Is the program really no cost?
Yes. If you’re eligible, your tuition, supplies, and materials are covered — so you can focus on your training.
